8 Benefits of being in Nature

We live in a generation where we are constantly in front of screens like mobile devices, computers, and tv’s ALL THE TIME. Each morning looks the same: wake up to the set alarm, check emails, scroll social media, brew the coffee, commute to work, and spend the day hustling under fluorescent lighting at the office. Many people living a fast-paced lifestyle and spending an average of 93% of their life indoors. Statistics show people are spending less time outside than ever before.

Unfortunately, our future-focused mentality and need to feel “connected” to the outside world through social media is taking a toll on our health and happiness. So, let’s change that!

Exposure to the sun is essential for our well-being. We need vitamin D, which is a key nutrient known to help fight off osteoporosis, fatigue, cancer, depression, anxiety, and a weak immune system.

Studies have shown that being in nature can improve your health. I have listed the top 8 health benefits from nature below:

  1. Boosts immune system
  2. Lowers blood pressure
  3. Reduces stress
  4. Improves mood
  5. Accelerates recovery from surgery or illness
  6. Increases energy level
  7. Improves sleep
  8. Fights depression

Will you make time to get outdoors and unplug?

Here are my favorite ways to feel connected whether you have 5 minutes or an entire day!

  • Enjoy a bike ride
  • Read a book or journal under a tree
  • Eat a meal outside with a view you enjoy
  • Take a walk around the neighborhood
  • Swim in the ocean
  • Watch an incredible sunset
  • Take advantage of hiking trails
  • Rent a kayak or canoe
  • Check out local waterfalls
  • Have a picnic
  • Walk your dog (or get a dog)

Research has also shown that by walking barefoot on sand, grass, moist soil, and or small rocks can improve sleep, reduce stress, and boost immune system. If you’re unable to get outside, open windows, blinds, curtains, and doors to allow sunlight and natural air flow through your home to kill airborne infections, bacteria, and make it more relaxing.
